Puppmills are commercial breeding facilities that produce
purebred & mixed breeds (sometimes called designer breeds,
Ex. Cockapoos) puppies where dogs are only there for the sole
purpose to be breed their entire life. Most puppy mills are
located in the Midwest in rural area, where Amish or rural
people are breeding them.
Most puppy mills are USDA licensed, dogs are kept all their
life in small cages outside where they pee and poop through
wires, conditions of life are very poor, minimal veterinary
care, often fighting together, poor quality of food, huge
lack of socialization, overcrowded cages, and the killing
of unwanted animals Thousands of these breeding operations
currently exist in the United States, many of them despite
repeated violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA).
Across the Midwest in the Spring and the Summer there are
auctions of dogs where millers are selling some of their breeding
stock. Some of these auctions are kennel dispersals and others
are consignments. The auctions are horrifying experiences.
The first one you go to will certainly change your life. The
auctioneers have no concern whatsoever for the dogs. The dogs
are tossed around and promoted solely for whatever monetary
value they might bring. The dogs are frequently injured, ill,
missing limbs, or even their bottom jaw. They are all terrified.
Dogs are considered and treated " Livestock".
Most pet store puppies are coming from puppy mills. Their
parents are "breeding stock" and will be kept in
a cage for the rest of their life. There are also places just
like puppymills for kittens, ferrets, rabbits, birds, etc.
Please educate yourself before acquiring a new pet.
